Stop Memorizing Rigid Essay Templates: How a 14-Year-Old Built an 'AI Socratic English Writing Coach' in 60 Minutes
Parents of middle and high schoolers know the English essay struggle well: kids either stare at a blank page for half an hour, cram rigid “universal essay templates” that sound awkward on real exams, or secretly ask an AI chatbot to write the whole essay in three seconds—learning nothing in the process.
Last weekend, I worked with a 14-year-old 8th grader in Hangzhou who had just scored 7.5 out of 15 on his midterm English composition. Instead of lecturing him on grammar rules, we spent 60 minutes turning him into a Junior Product Manager to build his own AI Socratic English Writing Coach.

1. The 3 Product Guardrails Designed by the 14-Year-Old
- Never Write the Full Essay: The tool is strictly forbidden from outputting a finished paragraph to copy.
- Socratic Detail Probing: When the student types a flat idea (“I cooked scrambled eggs with tomatoes last Sunday, it was good”), the tool asks 3 sensory questions (What sound did the pan make? Did any small mishap happen? How did your parents react?).
- Chinglish Surgery & “Very” Upgrader: The student writes Draft 1 in their own words. The tool highlights grammar bugs and replaces flat
very + adjectivephrases (very happy, very good) with grade-appropriate natural expressions (filled with pride, mouth-watering).
